A GREEK BRONZE HELMET OF PHRYGIAN TYPE
LATE CLASSICAL TO EARLY HELLENISTIC PERIOD, CIRCA 350-300 B.C.
A GREEK BRONZE HELMET OF PHRYGIAN TYPE LATE CLASSICAL TO EARLY HELLENISTIC PERIOD, CIRCA 350-300 B.C. Of hammered heavy sheet, formed of two sections, the high crown arching forward and terminating in a vertical rounded peak, a carinated ridge above the flaring rim, the neck-guard extending lower than the visor, its front edge with rounded ear protectors overlapped by pointed projections at the rear of the visor, the back ornamented with an appliqué with a frontal facing head surmounted by a pointed tip with horizontal grooves, with two perforations on each side of the rim for attachment of the face-guards, naturalistically modelled in the form of a beard and mustache, with rows of individual snail curls with incised running spirals, the mustache with thin angled incisions along its tapering length, raised around the lips, projecting up at the center on the inside of the eye holes, perforated at the front tips, hinged at the tops 16½ in. (41.9 cm.) high
