A GROUP OF FIVE BODHISATTVA HEADSNorthern Wei (386-585) - Sui dynasty (581-618), and later
Comprising (from left to right) a black limestone head of a bodhisattva with an oval face, the lips drawn into a subtle smile beneath high cheekbones, the eyelids partially lowered, and the hair pulled into a high chignon gently falling in four sections, Northern Wei dynasty; a molded red pottery head of Avalokiteshvara with a fleshy face, full lips, and lowered eyes below arched eyebrows, the hair pulled into a chignon behind a tall five-pointed diadem, strands of beads suspended between the sections of the crown, Northern Zhou dynasty-style; a limestone head of Avalokiteshvara with an oval face and soft features framed by pendulous ears, the hair parted down the middle and pulled behind a tall multi-pointed diadem, Northern Zhou - Sui dynasty; a small head of a bodhisattva with small lips beneath a distinctly pointed nose, the hair pulled in sections into a chignon tied with a ribbon falling alongside the pendulous ears, Northern Qi dynasty; and a limestone head of a bodhisattva similarly styled to the first, but with the loose ends of the ribbon tying the hair falling alongside the pendulous ears, Northern Wei dynasty.
