Lot details Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Color woodblock prints on paper. 1. By Katsukawa Shunsho (1726-1792), signed Shunsho ga. Hosoban. Illustrating a samurai wielding his sword, few haystacks in the background, all under a pine tree. SIZE of the sheet 31.2 x 14.6 cm 2. By Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III) (1786-1864), signed in a cartouche, censor’s seal aratame, Goat; publisher Hayashiya Shogoro. Vertical oban. Illustrating a portrait of a samurai as he opens a scroll. SIZE of the sheet 36.5 x 25.1 cm 3. By Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga with artist's paulownia seal, censor’s seal Murata, Mera; publisher Yamamoto Heikichi. Vertical oban. Titled No. 42 Nagamura Bunkasai Michie from the series Taiheiki eiyuden (Heroes of the Great Peace). Illustrating Nagamura Bunkasai Michie (the historical Nakamura Bunkasai) having just broken a pottery vessel against the wall. SIZE of the sheet 35.6 x 23.8 cm Condition: Good condition with wear and slightly trimmed margins. Slight fading of colors, minor creasing, and pilling. The Kunisada with binding holes. The Kuniyoshi with a centerfold. Provenance: Estate of Wolfgang Zacke (1942-2022), co-founder of Galerie Zacke, thence by descent. Museum comparison: An identical print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi is in the collection of the British Museum, museum number 2008,3037.05618.
