A HIGHLY IMPORTANT AND EXTREMELY RARE WHITE JADE LIBATION CUP
A HIGHLY IMPORTANT AND EXTREMELY RARE WHITE JADE LIBATION CUP QIANLONG PERIOD, CYCLICAL DINGYOU DATE CORRESPONDING TO AD 1777 AND OF THE PERIOD The tall vessel, imitating a rhinoceros horn cup, exquisitely carved in high relief with groups of figures in a rocky mountainous landscape, with two figures seated beside a pavilion on the far shore of a lake awaiting the arrival of two scholars and a servant carrying a qin who are approaching a sampan moored near a footbridge in the mid-distance, the reverse with another sage standing on a promontory admiring the surrounds planted with pine, wutong and maple trees, pierced to form the handle, with a lengthy Imperial poem occupying one of the overhanging ledges beneath the rim, ending with two seals, tai , and gua , and a notation that it was composed at the beginning of spring in the dingyou year, corresponding to A. D. 1777, the six-character Da Qing Qianlong Fanggu seal mark inscribed on the base, the semi-translucent stone of an even white tone with tiny areas of russet inclusions 6 5/8 in.
