A HIGHLY IMPORTANT GROUP OF PRESENTATION MEDALS AWARDED TO THE ROOSEVELT FAMILY. Fourth Inauguration of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 1945, bronze medal, 450 mm., by Jo Davidson profile bust right of FDR, rev., sailing ship under full sail, "Thou too sail on o ship of state -- sail on o union strong and great," in a presenation box inscribed "E.R From F.D.R. January 30, 1945," with another medal as before, box inscribed "J.A.R. From F.D.R. January 30, 1945," a third medal, bronze, 500 mm., by Tasset, awarded to Mrs. Roosevelt on her visit to St. Lô, France, in 1947 by the mayor of the city, arms of the city, rev. with oak wreath, "OFFERT PAR HENRI LIEBARD MAIRE DE SAINT LÔ," in a red leather case, first item, hinge on box broken, otherwise all boxes and medals in fine condition. The first two medals were awarded to Eleanor Roosevelt and John A. Roosevelt personally by F.D.R. on the occasion of his fourth inauguration as President in 1945. The sailing ship on the reverse of these and the verse by Longfellow is a reference to the wartime relationship between F.D.R. and Winston Churchill The third item was presented to Mrs. Roosevelt by the mayor of St. Lô on her visit to the city in 1947. St. Lô had been the scene of heavy fighting during World War II. The inaugural medal awarded to Eleanor Roosevelt was exhibited at the F.D.R. Centennial in 1982 in New York State; the St. Lô medal was exhibited at the Eleanor Roosevelt Centennial in 1984 in New York State. (3)
