Historic Winchester 2nd Model 1866 lever action rifle belonging to G.R. Wood of Wisconsin and later San Francisco, California. Wood was a hardened and wounded Civil War veteran who served under Sherman and Grant in pursuit of the infamous Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forest and who later was living and working in San Francisco, California as a "collector" according to research. Rifle is serial numbered on inside of tang RV19823 making this gun built in 1869 by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Gun has 21 -5/8" octagon .44 caliber cut down rifled barrel with Henry address, full magazine tube, and extra dovetail with homespun rifle sights. Gunmetal action with G.R. Wood professionally engraved on left side of frame, possibly by Winchester. Oil stain walnut stock with brass trap buttplate and rifle sling plate. Oil stained matching walnut forearm with gunmetal nosepiece. Comes with research on Captain Wood and gun. CONDITION: Overall poor with repaired stock and added finish. Heavily worn saddle damaged forend with dings and marks from heavy use. Poor bore with functioning mechanics. This gun is no closet queen; it lived and breathed in the Old West.
