(A) J. BEAR SIGNED FULLSTOCK FLINTLOCK RIFLE.

John Bear worked in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania from 1825 to 1840. Gun is featured in "The Lancaster Longrifle at the Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum" by Hornberger and Kolar on Plate 51. Gun features an octagon to round barrel with straight cut rifling, blade front sight, and notched rear rifle style sight. Barrel is signed in script "J. Bear". Flintlock marked "Wilkes Warranted". Full walnut stock with brass furniture. Gun is built with architecture of a fowler with no patchbox, fowler style buttstock, and engraved long tang trigger guard. CONDITION: Overall good condition with metal having a nice overall dark patina. Lock is a replacement and gun has been reconverted to flint with some pitting from its days as a percussion ignition system evident on barrel. Wood has no visible repairs with one crack in front of lock. Dark bore with visible rifling with good mechanics. A good solid and looking rifle by an uncommon maker.
