A Japanese burr wood and gilt-wood striking lantern clock with alarm and calendar Signed Araki Yamato No Jo Tidishi in Kyoto; first quarter 19th century The foliate carved convex-moulded base supporting the rectangular clock case with sliding front panel, pierced gilt-wood apertures to the sides and rear with apertures for access to winding squares, the lantern case sliding out on a wood seatboard, the rear panel and side doors engraved overall with scrolling foliage within an engraved border, the hinges formed as butterflies, the three panels removed reveal the movement with going barrels for the strike and alarm and Japanese style fusee for the going, foliot verge escapement, strike on bell above, the foliate engraved dial with stationary blued steel hand and revolving silvered chapter disc, the alarm set-off in the form of a stylised elephant with the trunk acting as the set-off arm, twin circular apertures above the chapter ring indicating the sixty days of the Chinese month, the rear left hand pillar signed in Japanese script Made by Araki Yamato No Jo Tadashi in Kyoto who lived in Shijo tori Sakaimachi, Kyoto 91/4 ins (23 cm) high
