A Lacquer Writing Box ( Suzuribako ) Edo Period (18th Century) The quatrefoil box designed on the lid with rocks, trees and grasses by a meandering stream in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with accents of e-nashiji and uchikomi on a roiro-nuri ground applied with hirame , the cloud band transversing the lid also gold embellished with okibirame and the three hills beyond raised slightly from the ground and sprinkled with kimpun ; the underside of the lid decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e and low-relief takamaki-e with wisteria vines and two mandarin orange crests of the Ii family on a nashiji ground which are repeated on the lower interior of the box; fitted with two removable implement trays, the left one containing an oblong inkstone and rectangular copper mizuire , the bases of the tray and below them roiro and nashiji and the sides and base of the writing box roiro and hirame 8½ x 75/8 x 1½in. (21.7 x 19.6 x 3.7cm.)
