*A LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PEN CASE WITH EUROPEAN LANDSCAPE VIEWS (QALAMDAN) PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT EUROPEAN PRIVATE COLLECTION Shiraz, Iran, last quarter 19th century With rounded ends and sliding tray, polychrome-painted and heightened with gold on a light brown ground, the top and sides painted with long oval cartouches filled with romantic landscapes of Russian inspiration, inhabited by a few diminutive figures, with imposing cliffs, large bridges, wide rivers and castellated buildings, the edges and underside painted with gilt European-inspired vegetal meanderings and Qajar lush rose bouquets, the internal tray black and plain, 22.5cm long. This pen box shares a variety of features with the Russian-inspired qalamdans produced in Iran as a copy of the European-imported ones of the late 19th century, now part of the Khalili Collection of Islamic Art (Khalili, Robinson and Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands: Part 2, London, 1997, pp.232 - 233).
