A LARGE FAMILLE-VERTE HELMET-SHAPED EWERKangxi period
The form based on French baroque silver of the seventeenth century, a wide central horizontal band painted in the traditional famille-verte palette with a continuous scene of a bird amidst prunus branches, the lower section molded to imitate the lambrequin design on the silver prototypes and richly enameled in alternate colors of yellow, aubergine, and green, all above the stepped spreading foot, the shaped rim of the vessel centered by a molded bearded human mask dividing floral decoration and further multi-colored lappets, a stylized pistol-grip handle to the other narrow side.
10 7/8in (27.6cm) highFootnotesProvenance:
Philip Suval, Inc., New York, 2 September 1992
See a Kangxi period famille-verte ewer of similar type sold Christie's, Amsterdam, 2-3 October 2012, lot 315.
See Poly Latham Asian Art (https://pollylatham.com/magnificent-kangxi-famille-verte-ewer-7425) for a very similar helmet-shaped ewer also painted with a wide central band of a bird amidst prunus branches and where the authors note that the form was taken directly from French baroque silver forms of the period. Many important silver objects of this type were melted down to help fund the ruinously expensive wars of Louis XIV. Chinese porcelain examples were then ordered as replacements for the melted silver wares and became the new benchmark of luxury and status.Read MoreAdditional informationAuction informationLOTS IN THE Catalogue WITH A "T" NEXT TO THE LOT NUMBER CONTAIN A US IMPORT TARIFF
