A LARGE GEORGE II CIRCULAR BREAD BASKET, the spreading foot chased with a band of acanthus leaves, the sides pierced with trelliswork and scrolls and with an applied moulded rib above a band of chased strapwork and rosettes on a matted ground, the cast leaf-capped handle with a narrow band of husks on a matted ground, the interior engraved with a coat-of-arms within a Baroque cartouche, the reverse with a further coat-of-arms also within a Baroque cartouche and presentation inscription, by Louis Laroche, 1733 12¼in. (31.3cm.) diam. 11½in. (29cm.) high (79ozs.) The arms are those Eliot impaling Craggs for Richard Eliot Esq. M.P. (1694-1748) of Port Eliot, co. Cornwall and his wife Harriot, natural daughter of The Rt. Hon. James Craggs P.M.G., Secretary of State in the reign of George I, whom he married on 4th March 1726. Harriot married secondly The Hon. John Hamilton and their son John James was created 1st Marquess of Abercorn in 1790. Richard was Auditor and Receiver General to the Prince of Wales. The second coat-of-arms are those of Knight quartering Slaughter, Leech and Bellinham with Cragg in pretence? for John Knight Esq. (b.1694-1733), M.P. for St. Germans in 1710, 1713 and 1714 and his wife Anne, daughter of The Rt. Hon James Craggs (c.1657-1721) Post Master General. Anne's brother, also James Craggs (1680-1721) fathered an illegitimate child Harriot who married Richard Eliot (see above). The arms The inscription reads, 'The Gift of M r s Knight to Rich d Eliot Esq r to whose latest posterity may it remain in Memory of his worthy Friend John Knight Esq r of Gosfield Bell House in y e County of Essex
