A LARGE 'MARSHMALLOW' SOFA DESIGNED BY GEORGE NELSON ASSOCIATES, PRODUCED BY HERMAN MILLER CO. CIRCA 1955 Comprising a series of thirty-eight 'marshmallow' cushions in pink, violet, red and orange on a black metal frame-- 104in. (264.2cm.) wide, 31in. (78.7cm.) high, 32 1/2in. (82.5cm.) deep EROVENANCE Con Edison Switching Station, West End Avenue, New York (one of two) 50/50 Gallery, New York. A Private Collector Christie's, New York, March 28, 1987, lot 154 cf. Anne Bony, 1950's , Edition du Regard, Paris, 1982, p. 277, for an illustration of a drawing of the production model; and Martin Eidelberg, ed., Design 1935-1965 What Modern Was , Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York, 1991, p. 308, fig. 480 for an illustration of the prototype 'Marshmallow' sofa and p.309 where David Hanks notes that this prefabricated sofa "developed by Irving Harper in the Nelson office is based on an unusual concept in assembly: attaching a series of eighteen separate circular upholstered cushion units to an exposed frame...Although the uphostery was generally monochromatic, several examples with original upholstery have ÿa polychromatic scheme, with very-bright colored vinyl cushions".
