A LARGE PORTABLE LACQUER ZUSHI [SHRINE] Edo Period (Late 17th/Early 18th Century) The two-door shrine with black lacquer gilt fittings engraved with floral motifs, the interior revealing Nyorin Kannon 1 seated in the position of royal ease, two of the six arms hold the wheel and jewel, on an elaborate moveable lotus throne, the figure decorated in gold lacquer and wearing gilt jewels mounted with glass beads, the interior of the left door depicting Jizo Bosatsu dressed as a monk holding a monk's staff and the jewel 2 above Fudo Myoo 3, the right door with Kokuzo Bosatsu 4 above Komoku-ten standing on a white beast, here shown holding a trident which is usually the attribute of Zocho-ten 5, all decorated in polychrome on gold ground, slight old damage 15in. (40cm.) high
