A late Victorian/Edwardian mahogany and marquetry miniature longcase timepiece, in George III style, 6cm circular enamel dial inscribed W. Thornhill ... & Co., 144 & 145 New Bond Street, London, Roman numerals, single winding hole, the case with arched cresting above a faux door to waist flanked by split turnings, inlaid in coloured and shaded woods with a Classical urn and batwing paterae, plinth base, 41.5cm high, c.1900 Walter Thornhill & Co were one of the most distinguished makers and retailers of high quality accoutrements, including jewellery, silver and clocks. His son, Hugh Thornhill entered a mark as a silversmith in 1895. Walter Thornhill was descended from the Derbyshire family of Thornhill of Castleton.. Read more
