ELIZABETH : D .' G .' AN .' FR .' ET • HI .' REGINA, St. Michael vanquishing Dragon, rev. (m.m.) A : DNO • FACTVM • EST • ISTVD . ET : EST : MIRA' •, Ship surmounted by square-topped shield and crucifix mast dividing E and Rose, twisted rigging 2/1, with bowsprit, waves lapping below, 2.55g [39.4grns], 2h, m.m. ermine (HCN 342; Montagu III, 68 same dies; Murdoch -; Lockett 4094 this coin; Comber I, -; Schneider I, 770-774 this m.m. unrepresented; Brown & Comber D5, and Pl. IX this coin; North 1992/1; Spink 2517), minor surface scuffs to peripheries and a faint scratch in obverse field, otherwise a most handsome, uniform and lustrous example, extremely fine or very near so and extremely rare, especially in this most appealing state of preservation Brown and Comber record eight instances of this privy mark for denomination [not accounting for duplication] as listed in the Spink Numismatic Circular and Seaby Bulletin between 1937 and 1983. At the time of the Montagu sale, his example was considered unique. Challis records the mint output for this Pyx Period at £21,022.
