A LOUIS XV ORMOLU-MOUNTED BRASS-INLAID TORTOISESHELL STRIKING BRACKET CLOCK FORTIN, PARIS, SECOND QUARTER 18TH CENTURY CASE: the clock and bracket inlaid overall with foliate scrolls, the waisted glazed case headed by fruited foliate trails and surmounted by a turbanned putto, mounted to the front with a classical scene depicting Neptune and amphitritis on a seahorse-drawn chariot, the interior inlaid with a trompe l'oeil damier floor, on scroll feet, the tapering bracket inlaid with egg-and-dart frieze, foliate-headed putti to the angles, and C-scroll-decorated apron, the turbanned putto originally holding further ormolu elements, now lacking; key DIAL: ormolu and applied with individual white enamel chapters and with engraved outer minute ring, enamel centre signed 'FORTIN A PARIS', hands now gilded MOVEMENT: with rectangular plates joined by five vase-shaped pillars, now with Brocot-type anchor escapement, with calibrated countwheel for strike on bell above, the back plate also signed; pendulum The clock: 40 in. (101.5 cm.) high; 19¾ in. (50 cm.) wide; 8 in. (20 cm.) deep; The bracket: 16 in. (41 cm.) high; 21½ in. (54.5 cm.) wide; 9 in. (23 cm.) deep
