A LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED AND WEDGWOOD JASPERWARE-MOUNTED THUYA MAHOGANY AND PLUM-PUDDING MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE A ABATTANT BY NICOLAS-PHILIPPE DUSSAULT, SUPPLIED BY DOMINIQUE DAGUERRE CIRCA 1787 The rectangular grey-veined white marble top with pierced balustrade above a frieze drawer mounted with scrolling foliate rinceaux arabesques and centered by a ribbon-tied and pearl-swagged floral garland with confronting doves, flanked by pierced rosettes, the whole supported by two engaged baluster columns with stiff-leaf capitals hung with swags, flanking a fall front simulated as a pair of oval paneled doors, each mounted with a central canted rectangular plaque, one playing a lyre, the other stands by an enflamed altar, surrounded by the signs of the Zodiac and with pierced acanthus arabesque spandrels and ribbon-tied borders, enclosing a fitted interior with a gold-metal thread-lined silk velvet writing-surface, a mirror-backed compartment with stained parquetry and marquetry drawers inlaid with stylized arabesques, the interior drawers all mahogany lined, the sides similarly mounted with canted rectangular jasperware plaques each depicting a lyre-player, above a frieze drawer with associated Riesener-type keyhole escutcheon, flanked by further small cameo panels and enclosing a further mahogany-lined drawer, the apron swagged with ribbon-tied floral garlands, on square legs with ribbon twist corners and mille-raies panels, above an undertier with pierced three-quarter gallery and drapery-swagged base, on turned tapering toupie legs with stiff-leaf sabot and ball feet, stamped four times N.P.DUSSAULT , with a handwritten blue canted label 3315 , the reverse of the larger jasperware plaques stamped WEDGWOOD , variously inscribed to the reverse, one oak back panel inscribed in 18th century handwriting côté droit 47 in. (119.5 cm.) high, 33 in. (84 cm.) wide, 16¾ in. (42.5 cm.) deep
