A MAGNIFICENT RANGE OF VINTAGE PORT, INCLUDING A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO PURCHASE MORGAN PORT IN LARGE QUANTITIES This is a rare opportunity to purchase premium vintage port which has been shipped especially for this sale from their cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia by the Fladgate Partnership. The large range of Morgan Port which is part of this consignment (lots 629 to 772) comes about as a result of the purchase of the Port assets of Diageo by the Fladgate Partnership in 2001 which included all the assets of the business formerly known as Morgan Brothers Port. This distinguished company was founded by a London wine merchant that moved to Oporto in 1715 and started trading in Port. He was soon joined by a relative named Charles Dixon who produced one of the first branded ports 'Dixon's Double Diamond'; a Port which achieved notoriety when it was referred to in Charles Dickens novel 'Nicholas Nickleby'. In 1790, Aaron Morgan became a partner and, once he had admitted his brother to the business, changed the name to Morgan Brothers. It remained a family company until 1952 when it was bought by Croft, by then a division of Diageo, owners of the famous Rum brand Captain Morgan. Under Croft, the tradition of making fine vintage Port continued with most of the great 'declared' years being bottled. The sources of grapes for these vintages were maintained as the same vineyards that had sold grapes to Morgan over many years. In 2001 Croft itself was sold to the family who own Taylor's and Fonseca Port by Diageo, who decided to retain the brand name Morgan. As such, no Morgan vintage Ports have been made in recent years. The company maintained a library of vintage ports in its cellar and has now decided to release these to the market. Only small quantities remain and this sale marks the last time that they will be offered for purchase. The range of Morgan Port on offer encompasses 15 vintages from the period 1945 to 1997, including some substantial quantities of notable vintages such as 1963, 1977 and 1994.
