A MASSIVE AND FINELY PAINTED RUBY-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE BALUSTER VASE
QIANLONG/JIAQING PERIOD (1736-1820)
A MASSIVE AND FINELY PAINTED RUBY-GROUND FAMILLE ROSE BALUSTER VASE QIANLONG/JIAQING PERIOD (1736-1820) The vase is heavily potted with a baluster body rising from a splayed foot to a long neck flaring widely to the rim, flanked on either side of the shoulders with an archaistic phoenix handle enamelled in blue. The body is decorated with a cartouche on each side, one depicting a scene from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms depicting the Eastern Han heros Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei in initiation into sworn brotherhood in a peach garden, the opposite cartouche portraying another scene from the same novel with the three sworn brothers paying three visits to Zhuge Liang's thatched hut in attempt to enlist him to be their strategist, all against a sgraffiato ruby-red ground detailed with composite flowers borne on tendrils. The neck is decorated on each side with an elaborate treasure vase, one of the Eight Buddhist Emblems, surrounded by composite floral sprays reserved on a similar ground. The interior is enamelled turquoise. The base is unglazed. 29 1/4 in. (74.3 cm.) high
