Date: 1844 Description: xvi, 648, lvi pp. With 2 folding engraved maps; 16 etched plates, with tissue guards; woodcuts in the text. (8vo) 22.5x14 cm (8¾x5½"), original blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt. First Edition. Scarce account of travels and missionary activities in Mauritius and South Africa by the botanist and Quaker James Backhouse (1794-1869), who had earlier spent six years ministering to convicts and settlers in Australia. The larger of the two maps is James Wyld's South Africa, measuring 51x81.5 cm (with some light foxing, short stub tear). The other map shows Mauritius and other islands in the Indian Ocean. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing and wear to extremities, small indent in front cover; ink name to title-page, very good or better condition, contents quite fresh and partially unopened.
