A facsimile of the original frontispiece is tipped in at front. Title page printed in red and black. (4to) 30x19 cm (12x7"), period calf, raised spine bands. First Edition. This copy from the Fryer family library, with a manuscript sheet listing the births and death of Fryer family members from 1805 through 1868. The front free endpaper is signed by a [F.A.B.?] Fryer, dated 1912. John Fryer was an English doctor and traveler. He studied medicine at Cambridge, and was employed by the East India Company. December 1672 he embarked on a lengthy tour to India, Goa, the Arab Gulf and Persia, returning to England in August 1682. Fryer gives detailed account of both Surat and Muscat, and discusses pirates in the Gulf, tropical birds, the Imam of Muscat, the British trade in the area, and the locust. The plates include botanical and palms with fruit and topographical views. This copy lacks the original frontispiece, but has a facsimile, and apparently the last 4 pages of the index are lacking at the rear. Lot Amendments Condition: Wear and rubbing to binding, front joint cracked, rear starting, lacking spine label; hinges cracked, early ownership signature at front, areas of foxing and dampstaining throughout affecting plates; good or better.
