A PAESTAN RED-FIGURE LEPASTE attributed to the painter of naples 1778 circa 325 b.c. The lid with a seated woman facing left with her arms outstretched, a kekryphalos in her hair, her drapery with checkered borders, before her a small Eros with arms reaching toward her, to the left a swan and a standing woman on either side of a laver, further to the left, a standing draped woman with arms outstretched, to her left a small Eros reaching for a bird, to the left a satyr pursuing a maenad who looks back at him, a small satyr in front of her, added white detail now lost, but "ghosts" still visible for swans, wreaths, fillets, and alabastra between the figures, wings for the Erotes, the chair for the seated figure, and the flesh for the women, a frontal female head on the knob, features missing, enclosed within a band of bead-and-reel, a band of wave on the rim; the interior divided into four compartments around a central well, each with a lid with two perforations, two with a seated woman, a himation draped around the waist, and two with a nude youth before an altar, ghosts of added white details visible; the base with a band of meander between the handles 8¼ in. (21 cm.) in diameter excluding handles
