A PAIR OF 18-BORE BALKAN FLINTLOCK PISTOLS WITH GILT-METAL MOUNTS, IN THE FRENCH MANNER EARLY 19TH CENTURY With sighted russet three-stage barrels with engraved, punched, and gilt decoration (some gilding missing) comprising a thundercloud at the muzzle, a garland of flowers and foliage at the breech, and stars and foliage on the central section, each breech with a pseudo-French mark in the form of a fleur-de-lys with an oval barrelsmith's mark on each side, in imitation of the mark of Jean Nicolas Leclerc of Paris (Neue Støckel 182), engraved gilt tangs each incorporating the back-sight, bevelled locks each engraved with a vase of flowers and fruit and a cornucopia, and each with 'French' cock (one repaired), raised pan, and unintelligible 'signature' below each steel-spring, highly figured moulded full stocks carved with foliage in relief behind the barrel tang and rear ramrod-pipe, full gilt-metal mounts cast and chased in low relief with scrolls and strapwork involving cavalry skirmishes, grotesque masks, and a Classical portrait bust, spurred pommels each with grotesque mask cap, pierced side-plates each involving two stylised marine monsters, escutcheons with coronet above, engraved fore-end caps, and hollow false ramrods 18in.
