A Pair of Chinese Sancai Glazed Pottery Figures of Earth Spirits tang dynasty each figure with body of a seated lion. One figure with human head and hooved front feet and having a flame-like spire rising from his forehead. The other figure with lion head and paws and having deer-like antlers and a spiky mane. Both having stylized wings and whole bodies covered in green, cream and chestnut colors. Height 37 5/8 inches. Estimate $ 25,000-35,000 Provenance: The Historic Chinqua Penn Plantation, Reidsville, NC, acquired before 1930 Wear to glaze. Chips and frets throughout. Each having restoration to both wings, several spikes along the shoulders, spires and spikes on the head as well as other decorative elements. Examination under UV light show some residue in the areas of these restorations, but the restorations do not fluoresce. Surface residue consistent to restoration visible under natural and UV light. UV light shows yellowish fluorescence to the unglazed surfaces of each figure, unsure if this is the natural fluorescence of the original paint or if this is caused by overpainting.
