Beschreibung:

A pair of massive Japanese Satsuma pottery ovoid vases, late 19th century, each painted with samurai next to buildings and temples and the reverse with ladies and boys in landscapes, within polychrome and richly gilt decorated borders with dragons, brocade and floral designs, 76cm, together with two similar Japanese ebonised wood two tier stands, with flower carved aprons and four scrolling legs joined by a shaped undertier, total height on stands 150cm Estimate £3,000-4,000 Both vases have very light wear to the gilding around the rims, slight staining to the crazing on the interior of the necks, both with slight firing cracks visible on the interior which aren't visible on the exterior, both vases have fine cracks around the foot, which are not really visible when viewed sideways on, one vase has a slight indentation on the top rim which is overglaze in manufacture and a slight glaze loss to the foot and a slight firing crack on the very edge of the foot, again not really visible unless turned upside down and inspected closely, on the second vase the rectangular panel with samurai warriors there is a feint hairline crack extending a third of the height of the reserve which really just looks like the rest of the crazing to the glaze and the only reason it was picked up is because you can see a feint hairline on the inside of the vase, one vase also has occasional minor firing imperfections to the top rim, both the two stands which are very similar but not matching have wear to the ebonising on tops and generally a bit grubby but are basically structurally good, one stand has a reglued foot.
