A rare Chinese Tang style portrait on paper of Madame Tsouei, by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), beneath two inscriptions, 71.5cm x 24cm. Provenance: Ex Collection de Madame Langweil, Hotel Drouet, 5th June 1959, Lot 237. The upper inscription is taken from a letter in which mistress Tsouei wrote to Tchang Chen, followed by a verse by the poet Yang Kin Yen inspired by mistress Tsouei. This inscription purports to be by the famous painted Tschao-Meng of the Yuan Dynasty and is dated the 8th day of the 4th month in the 2nd year of Tesha-Ta (1309). This painting was authenticated by the late Professor Wai Kam Ho, as known work by Zhang Daqian who noted that it was sold at the same time as the Han Gan horse and groom was acquired by the French Government for the Muse Cernuschi, Paris. Other forgeries by Zhang Daqian are in the British Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Freer Gallery of Art, Washington DC, National Palace Museum, TaiPei, amongst others.
