A RARE FINELY CAST BRONZE WINE VESSEL AND COVER, YOU LATE SHANG/EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, 12TH-11TH CENTURY BC The pear-shaped body crisply cast in relief with two large taotie masks centered on and separated by vertical notched flanges set between a narrow band of dragons encircling the pedestal foot and a narrow band on the shoulder centered by a small animal mask separating elongated dragons with backward-turned heads, their tails either becoming or joined to the forequarters of another dragon with head turned away from the base of the handle that it flanks, all cast in relief on leiwen grounds, the cover similarly decorated below a finial divided into four quadrants cast with cicada masks, all below an arched, swing handle decorated with further dragons on a leiwen ground and cast in high relief at either end with a bottle-head dragon-mask terminal, with a bovine-mask pictogram cast in intaglio inside the cover and base of the interior of the vessel, with silvery patina and some green and azurite encrustation 11 7/8 in.
