A RARE PAIR OF ENAMELED YIXING VASES
SIGNED SHEN XI, DAOGUANG PERIOD (1821-1850)
A RARE PAIR OF ENAMELED YIXING VASES SIGNED SHEN XI, DAOGUANG PERIOD (1821-1850) Each vase, made of buff ware, has a compressed pear-shaped body raised on a waisted foot encircled by a band of key fret in blue enamels, and the sides are decorated with a wide band of impressed leiwen -diaper pattern covered in a reddish-brown slip, between narrow impressed petal-lappet borders, and below sprays of chrysanthemum, orchid and prunus painted in famille rose enamels on the shoulder and base of the neck, which is further decorated with upright leaf tips in blue enamel that rise to the five thick lobes that form the 'garlic head' mouth rim. Each base has two impressed marks, one circular reading bai , the other rectangular reading, Shen Xi. 9¼ in. (23.5 cm.) high (2)
