A Rectangular Export Lacquer Cabinet Momoyama-Edo period (early 17th century) Designed with a drop front hinged at the bottom containing ten drawers of different sizes, decorated in gold hiramaki-e and inlaid shell on a black-lacquer ground with the front panel of long-tailed birds in trees contained in a shaped panel surrounded by a border of dense crushed shell and chevrons, the sides with square panels of flowering mandarin orange trees, and the back with scrolling ivy in gold and red lacquer, all enclosed by zig-zag patterns and lozenge motifs, the interior drawers decorated in gold and red with a bridge over a swirling stream, cherry blossoms, bamboo, maple leaves on a stream, wisteria and bush clover, the central drawer decorated with a checkerboard pattern alternating in shell inlays and gold-lacquer florets below a carved wood arch and copper lock plate with impressed floret design, each drawer enclosed by a similar checkerboard design, the interior of the drop front designed to match the rear panel; copper hardware carved with scrolling vines, drawer interiors black 18 x 27 x 16in.
