A Roman pottery Samian Ware bowl
Circa 1st-3rd Century A.D.
The Gaulish Red Slip Ware bowl of Dragendorff Form 42, the rim with foliate barbotine decoration, a maker's mark in the form of a cross on the underside of the base, 16.5cm diam; nine Samian ware bowl fragments,
mainly of Dragendorff Form 37, the Gaulish Red Slip Ware fragments variously decorated, the largest fragment moulded with a band of ovolo, then elaborate scrolls, two circular medallions beneath, one with a seated figure holding a bowl, the other with nude winged eros, an elaborate foliate motif between, flanked on either side by recumbent deer, 18cm x 11cm, marked with collector's number GRA/38 in black ink; another fragment with vine leaf and tendril design below a band of ovolo, two original lead repairs remain, 11cm x 9.2cm, marked with collector's number MDV/1 in black ink; another fragment with a figure of a standing soldier in legionary dress with a partially preserved gladiator, 6.4cm x 6.4cm; another with a leaping horse, the foreparts of another animal preserved behind, 10.3cm x 8.6cm; another fragment depicting a woman standing on a plinth alongside a hare within a medallion, 10.5cm x 9.1cm; another with hunting scene, 9.6cm x 10.4cm; and three smaller fragments: an ivy leaf, a partially preserved female bust and ovolo, and a North African Red Slip Ware vessel rim fragment,
with an appliqué of a running bear, 13.5cm x 6.6cm (11)
