A SANCAI POTTERY FIGURE OF A CENTRAL ASIAN MERCHANT Tang dynasty, 8th century The figure modelled seated on a rockwork pedestal with his right leg raised, holding a large goose-shaped ewer in his arms, glazed in streakes of amber, cream and green, except for the unglazed chest and head, the fine features traced in black and red pigments on a base of white slip, the conical hat with three upturned flaps with traces of deep red pigments, head probably replaced, base restored 15¾ in. (40 cm.)
