A SQUARE QINGTIAN SEAL WITH MATCHING BOX, CARVED BY ZHAO ZHIQIAN, 1852 Katalognummer: CA0918-018 The stone mottled in hues of honey and mustard. Smooth surface polish and good patina. China dated to “Spring of 1852” (renzi year) and signed “Zhao Zhiqian”. The seal: “Buddhist Disciples” Of square shape, the seal face carved in relief with a four-character seal-script inscription. The top incised in xingshu, running script, with a nine-character inscription. The lidded hongmu box standing on four carved feet with good patina and grain. (3) Zhao Zhiqian (Chinese: 赵之谦; 1829–1884) was a renowned Chinese calligrapher, seal carver and painter in the late Qing Dynasty, "the leading scholar-artist of his day." Zhao's seal carving had profound influence on the later masters, such as Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi He is also known under the courtesy name of Yifu (益甫) and his pseudonym (hào) of Lengjun (冷君), which he changed to Huishu (撝叔) and Bei'an (悲盦) respectively later in his life.
