Title: A Token for Children: Being An Exact Account of the Conversion, Holy and Exemplary Lives, and Joyful Deaths of several Young Children Author: Janeway, James Place: Glasgow Publisher: Printed by Robert Sanders, one of Her Majesties Printers Date: 1703 Description: In two parts in one volume. [12], 47, [5], 67 pp. (32mo) 4½x2¾, seven signature groups bound in period sheep over boards, re-stitching in the gutters and spine. Janeway’s classic and morbid nursery tale, originally published in 1672, which began a popular trend for confessional style type writings. The Puritan James Janeway compiled numerous accounts of the conversions from young children and their testimonies before their early deaths. And next to Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress and the Scriptures, this was the most widely read book for children during the seventeenth century. Over the years, long to be considered a great addition to any well-rounded library for Christian studies. Despite condition flaws, this small book the size of a pocket bible, fits well into any early religious book collectors’ or special collections library. Lot Amendments Condition: A fairly worn and well-used copy, with large pieces missing to the heavily creased leather, corners chipped and turned; approximately the first 12 leaves with top corner missing (slightly affecting text to the first 8 leaves), content darkened, stains mostly to margins, wear to pp. 29-36 fore-edge of first part; still a fair and readable copy. Scarce. Item number: 168534
