A very rare Chelsea beaker, circa 1750-52 Of fluted form, vibrantly painted in the famille rose palette with a yellow crested ho-ho bird with blue wings and red tail feathers, perched upon a branch of flowering peony issuing from a blue scholar's rock, the reverse with two small winged green insects, 6.6cm high, raised anchor mark Fußnoten The decoration is most unusual. Although the bird is very much in kakiemon style, the flower painting and the softer, more muted palette show the influence of Chinese famille rose. The famille rose style was generally left to Bow and Worcester from where the decoration on this lot may have drawn inspiration, its rarity suggesting that it was not a successful venture for the Chelsea factory.
