A very rare Worcester sugar bowl, circa 1752-3The oval flared bowl of double ogee section moulded all around with rococo shell ornament, three trailing prunus branches moulded just above the foot, the borders inside and out painted with linked flowerheads and leafy branches, the interior base painted with a leafy spray, 13cm wideFootnotesProvenance The Macdonald Collection Gerald Moore Collection This rare form, unique to the Worcester factory, is believed to be a sugar bowl on the basis of related shapes in contemporary silver. Among the few recorded examples, the bowl from the Zorensky Collection, Part 1, lot 19, is the only specimen recorded that retains its cover. A similar bowl without a lid is in the Colonial Williamsburg Collection while another is illustrated by H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain (1954), pl.3, no 48. A further example was sold by Bonhams, 14 April 2010, lot 178.
