A Victorian carved oak mercury stick barometer Reynolds and Branson, Leeds, late 19th century With rosette-centred scroll carved crest and moulded cornice above bevel-glazed double canted opaque glass vernier scales calibrated in barometric inches, labelled 10. A.M. YESTERDAY and 10. A.M. TODAY to lower edge and inscribed ADD ONE TENTH FOR EACH NINETY FEET ABOVE THE SEA LEVEL beside signature REYNOLDS & BRANSON, LEEDS to upper margin, the trunk with applied anthemion motif flanked by double vernier adjustment screws above glazed mercury FAHRENHEIT and CENTIGRADE scale thermometer with geometric carved crest and apron above rosette decorated circular cistern cover to the scroll outline base with level adjustment screw to underside, 105.5cm (41.5ins) high. Reynolds and Branson are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working in Leeds from 1890.
