A Victorian marquetry drop dial wall timepiece, 30.5cm circular dial inscribed Thos. Moore, Derby, Roman numerals, single winding hole, eight-day ... fusee movement, the octagonal case with rectangular lenticle flanked by shaped brackets, 74cm high, c.1860 Thomas Moore worked at 22, later No. 4, Queen Street in Derby, close to All Saints' church (now the Cathedral). Her was born in 1812, son of Robert Moore framework knitter, and a nephew of another Derby maker, James Moore to whom he seems to have been apprenticed 1826-1833. Shortly afterwards he married Anne, sister of the Derby clockmaker Thomas Allport. He was succeeded about 1880 by his second son, Thomas, and the family were in business at Derby in Chesterfield until well into the 20th century. Read more
