CITES - A Victorian sterling silver mounted ivory smoker’s compendium, London 1878 by William Frederick Williams retailed by Walter Thornhill Composed of six silver mounted ivory sections with glass bottoms, the three smaller receptacles to the front detachable, a silver mounted ivory handle. The front with a cast head of an Indian elephant as a lighter, suspended from the trunk a bucket with striker to the front. Fully and part-marked throughout. The top mount of handle with WALTER THORNHILL & Co 144 NEW BOND ST, also with registration mark for 12th November 1878. Length – 31.5 cm / 12.25 inches Together with a letter to the vendor dated 19th October 2021 from the UK CITES Management Authority stating that “Thank you for proving photos of the silver and ivory smoker’s compendium. As the item is antique (pre-1947) and the ivory is worked, you would not need an CITES Article 10 Certificate to sell the item in Great Britain.”
