(4to) 11x8½, re-backed calf with spine laid down, gilt-lettered morocco spine labels. Fifth Edition. "This is the official account of Anson's voyage. England, at war with Spain in 1739, equipped eight ships under the command of George Anson to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America, for the purpose of cutting off Spanish supplies of wealth from the Pacific area." The resulting narrative is a compilation by Anson's chaplain, Richard Walter, how much edited by Anson's friend Benjamin Robins is debated. It 'has long occupied a distinguished position as a masterpiece of descriptive travel. Anson's voyage appears to have been the most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century." -Hill, p.318; Sabin 1626; Cox I, p. 49. With the bookplate of Alvin and Ethel Seale from their South Sea Library of San Francisco, dated 1936. Lot Amendments Condition: Covers detached; ink writing on blank preliminary leaf and on title page, title page very browned; the previous owner's embossed seal on title page, and each plate (at top corner); one large folding map (at pp. 348) with tape repairs at many folds; some foxing; else contents are clean, plates are bright; very good internally.
