A WAKIZASHI, PROBABLY HIZEN EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1680), SIGNED MINAMOTO YOSHISADA , ATTRIBUTED TO GORO MINAMOTO YOSHISADA Configuration ( sugata ): with longitudinal ridge line ( shinogi-zukuri ), shallow peaked back ( iori-mune ) and medium point ( chu-kissaki ); length ( nagasa ): 1 shaku , 4 sun , 8 bu (45.0 cm.); curvature ( sori ): koshi-zori of 1.1 cm.; decrease in width of blade ( fumbari ): 0.7 cm.; a few very small nicks in the hasaki in the monouchi and kissaki . Forging pattern ( jihada ): wood and burl grains ( itame mokume ). Tempering pattern ( hamon ): medium suguba with slight irregularities ( ko-midare ) with areas resembling shallow crescent moons placed reverso and on ends. Point ( boshi ): brushed tip ( hakikake ). Tang ( nakago ). Shape ( keitai ): wide, ubu and with a moist, brown patina; file marks ( yasurime ): slanted ( katte-sagari ); end ( nakagojiri ): ha-agari kuri-jiri ; holes ( mekugi-ana ): one; signature ( katanamei ): Minamoto Yoshisada . A black lacquer ishime fuemaki-zaya ; remaining mounts missing.
