A well-engineered 5 inch gauge model of a Great Western Railway County Class 4-4-0 tender locomotive No 3808 ‘County Limerick’, built by Mr R Curtis of Clase, Swansea, the silver soldered copper boiler with fittings including water sight glass, pressure gauge, regulator, direction control, drip oilers and lever operated fire door. Chassis with twin outside cylinders, Stephenson’s internal valve gear, cylinder drain cocks, fluted motion, injector and eccentric driven axle water pump. Six wheel GWR 1070 3500 gallon Swindon tender having fitted hand feed pump, fitted tool boxes, vents, rear lamps, steps and hand rails. The model finished in Great Western Railway green and black lined livery with crest and fitted with couplings, vacuum hoses, steps, hand-irons and detailed rivet work. Length 159cm. Cab width 24cm. The model comes together with a display track. * No boiler History available * This model County was the last new GWR 4-4-0 design and by far the most modern, with inside frames and outside cylinders. They were designed as a part of George Jackson Churchward's standardisation plan, but were found to have a front end too powerful for the wheel arrangement and all were withdrawn by the early 1930s. They were designed, in part, for the Hereford to Shrewsbury LNWR line over which the GWR had running powers, but on which they were expressly forbidden to use 4-6-0 locomotives. The 4-4-0 Counties were in effect a shortened GWR 2900 Class, providing engines powerful enough for the trains but with the requisite four coupled wheels.
