China, 1875-1908. The deep rounded sides rising from a short ring foot to a thick everted rim. With a six-character mark da Qing Guangxu nianzhi to the recessed base in underglaze blue and of the period. Provenance: Old Austrian private collection. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities, such as pitting, open bubbles, spotting, glaze pooling and recesses. Painted in blue and white as well as iron-red to the interior with a central medallion enclosing a single bat surrounded by scrolling clouds, the exterior with five evenly spaced bats (wufu) surrounded by scrolling clouds, all framed by two circumferential lines above the foot and below the rim. Weight: 276.4 g Dimensions: Diameter 16.7 cm Chinese artists have long used five bats to represent the five blessings: health, long life, prosperity, love of virtue, and a tranquil, natural death.
