Abert, James W. (fl. circa 1850) Report of the Secretary of War, Communicating a Report and Map of the Examination of New Mexico. Washington, D.C.: for the Senate, 1848. Octavo, folding map and twenty-four lithographs, half calf and marbled paper boards, scattered light foxing to text and first plate, generally clean, 9 x 5 in. The earliest printed account of one of the great government-sponsored explorations of the southwest. The plates, attributed to Abert, include views of Santa Fe, Fort Marcy, San Felipe, the Pueblos, Indians, and other subjects. The text recounts Abert's trek from Fort Leavenworth over the Santa Fe Trail. The map of New Mexico was the must accurate of its time. Provenance: The Estate of David Spinney.
