Traduit de l'Allemand Author: Baraga, F[rederic] Place: Paris Publisher: A La Société des Bons Livres Date: 1837 Description: [4]. 296 pp. 18.8x10.6 cm. (7½x4¼"), original yellow printed wrappers. Abbreviated translation of: Geschichte, Character, Sitten und Gebräuche der nord-amerikanischen Indier. The author was a missionary among the Indians of Lake Superior, and wrote a grammar of the Otchipwe language as well as producing several ecclesiastical works in that language. The present volume was printed in Paris when the Baraga was in Europe raising money for his work in Michigan. Howes B111; Sabin 3246; Sotheby's Siebert Sale 393. Lot Amendments Condition: Just a little edge wear and faint soiling to wrappers, occasional foxing to contents, still in very good to fine condition, untrimmed and largely unopened in the original wrappers, especially rare thus.
