Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi, Kitab al'Aerab fi Ilm'al-Aerab (Theology on Arabic language and expressions), in Arabic, illuminated manuscript on paper [probably Ottoman Turkey, dated 1229 AH (1814 AD)] 33 leaves, textually complete, single column, 13 lines black nasta'liq, headings and catchwords in red, illuminated heading opening text, decorated with fine swirling floral vines, with pounced gold detailing, leaves ruled in gold, some contemporary ink commentaries to margins, a few scattered smudges to ink but overall clean and crisp condition, 215 by 135mm.; contemporary red morocco, covers ruled in blind with centrally stamped medallions in gilt, lightly rubbed, new endpapers added, gilt edges Abu al-Hasan al-Wahidi (d. 1078 AD) was a philologist and eminent scholar of the Qur'an known primarily for writing the Kitab Asbab al-Nuzul, which puts the revelations of Qur'anic verses into a historical context. He was also a student of Al-Tha'labi, famous for his Tasfir al-Tha'labi, on the stories of the prophets, whose influence runs through much of al-Wahidi's work.
