Adams") as President, on folded cover sheet (letter not present) addressed to "William Smith Esquire, Merch[an]t Boston," brown circular "30/MR" Franklin mark and "Free" handstamp, docketed in blue at the top right "Dated March 1798", front panel only present, otherwise very fine, with a large, clear signature. A frank demonstrating Adam's idiosyncratic placement of the franking signature. Adams enjoyed the franking privilige most of his adult life, starting as a member of the Continental Congress in 1775. Provenance : Edward Stern ( History of the 'Free Franking' of Mail in the United States, , New York, 1936, illust. pl. 75, no.2).
