An Oration delivered at the State-House, in Philadelphia, to a very numerous Audience; on Thursday, the 1st of August, 1776.
Philadelphia, printed; London, Re-printed for E. Johnson ” 1776. [2], 42 pp., 8vo (202 x 120 mm). Lacks the half title. Later half green morocco by Sangorki & Sutcliffe. Condition : inner hinge reinforced, rear hinge starting; restoration along the front joint, rear joint worn. first edition of a false philadelphia imprint. This oration was never delivered in Philadelphia; indeed, it was never given by Adams at all. The work, published before knowledge of American Independence had reached London, is entirely a fabrication bent on fanning the flames of the Revolution and was “designed to show that the colonies were bent on independence” (Howes). Although the pamphlet was widely-circulated and reprinted in several languages, this first edition is very rare . Adams, American Controversy 76-106a; Howes A72; Sabin 344.
