Greatly influenced by the work of Jean Louis Meissonier, Lesrel painted historical scenes with elegantly costumed figures. His most common subjects were the upper class, specifically lively groups of cavaliers and scenes of courtship. His work is marked by historical accuracy and extreme attention to detail. Lesrel's work was extremely popular in both Europe and America. He exhibited at the Societaire des Artistes Francais and was an Associate of the Salon Nationale des Arts.
