After SALVATOR ROSA (1615-1673). Serie dei LXXXV disegni in varie grandezze composti dal celebre pittore Salvator Rosa publicati ed incisi da Carlo Antonini . , [Rome, 1780] 2° (520 x 342mm.), 62 engraved plates only, engraved by Carlo Antonini after Salvator Rosa on 29 leaves, comprising 49 small plates from the Figurine series including half-title, and 13 large plates (lacking title, some dampstaining not affecting images, some light, mostly marginal spotting, 2 corners repaired, one short marginal repair), late 19th-century black morocco-backed papered boards (extremities worn, scuffed). This volume includes the majority of Salvator Rosa's best-known and most popular works, the Figurine series. Rosa's etchings of male and female genre figures, soldiers, warriors and youths in exotic costumes, from ca. 1656-7, had a wide-ranging influence on western art and became especially popular in 18th-century England. The youthful figure in the title plate, used in various forms in publications of Rosa's work, is perhaps an allegorical self-portrait by Rosa, who points to his name in the title below. A full list of plates by Bartsch and Wallace number is available on request. Sold not subject to return. Brunet IV 1390, cf. Richard W. Wallace, The Etchings of Salvator Rosa , Princeton, 1979.
